A Flemish painter of still lifes and flowers, landscapes, and mythological and allegorical scenes, Jan Brueghel the Younger (Antwerp, 1601-1678) was an independent and highly talented artist.
The eldest son of Jan Brueghel the Elder and therefore grandson of Pieter Bruegel the Elder, he probably trained in his father's workshop. His father encouraged him to travel to Milan in 1622 and enter the service of Cardinal Federico Borromeo. From Milan, he traveled to Malta and Sicily.
He repeated his father's still lifes, garlands of flowers, landscapes, and allegories, but he did not do so as a mere copyist; rather, he incorporated new elements and gave his work a personal touch.
