The Giardino di Ninfa is located in the Lazio region and is considered one of the most beautiful and romantic gardens in the world. It was built on the ruins of the medieval town of Ninfa, in the Pontine Marshes. It has been declared a Natural Monument.
The garden's name derives from a Roman-era temple dedicated to the Naiad nymphs, the goddesses of freshwater. In the 14th century, the city of Ninfa was destroyed, and in the 16th century, the Caetani family decided to create a garden with springs, fountains, plants, trees, and flowers. However, it wasn't until the 19th century that the family actually built the garden.
The Nymph's Garden is an English-style garden, with cypresses, beeches, holm oaks, marshes, palaces and ruins.
The Giardino di Ninfa covers approximately eight hectares and is home to over 1,300 botanical species. There are 19 varieties of deciduous magnolia, water lilies, and Japanese maples. The cherry blossoms in spring are spectacular, as are the tulips and apple trees.
