Durante la época victoriana los Prerrafaelitas fueron un grupo de pintores y poetas que propugnaban el regreso al detallismo minucioso y al luminoso colorido de los primitivos italianos y flamencos anteriores a Rafael.

Entre dichos pintores que buscaban devolver el naturalismo y el detalle realista a la pintura y perseguían la belleza y la delicadeza absoluta en cada una de sus pinceladas, estaba Frederic Leighton y su sublime talento para tratar la luz y las texturas.

En sus pinturas, aparecen figuras paganas y mitológicas de bordes difuminados que dan a sus acabados un aspecto onírico, y las luces y las texturas de las telas y de los detalles, se ven enriquecidos por gamas cromáticas cálidas en su mayoría.
